The aim of an Eco-Breakfast
The aim of the eco-breakfast is to draw together interested and concerned people
from among various congregations and communities in order to engage in discussion and reflection on environmental and ecological issues.
The breakfasts occur on the third Tuesday of each month at St Francis of Assisi, Parkview

Eco-Spirituality: "15 billion years in 45 minutes": A talk by Margaret Silf
Margaret Silf is a retreat conductor living in England and author of several books on spirituality and the spiritual journey.
One of her most recent books is "Roots and Wings" which explores spirituality from an origins perspective.
"There is a story gestating that is as big as the universe, and as mysterious, and as mind blowing and as beautiful.
And the amazing thing is that as we begin to explore the narrative of this great story, we find that we are growing inside that story ...
there is a story growing inside you and you are growing inside a story."
Eco Overload: A talk by Donald Gibson
Video and talk on the recent report -S.A Environmental Outlook- commissioned by
the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (D.E.A.T)
The talk was an overview of the current state of the South African environment.
Donald Gibson's role in the project was as project manager. Donald is one of the leading authors of the SAEO.
Donald Gibson is a registered environmental scientist with the South African Council of Natural Scientific Professionals and
has worked in the field of environment and development over the past 10 years.
He holds an Honours degree in wildlife science, and a Masters degree in Conservation Biology from the University of the Witwatersrand.
He has worked mainly in the fields of policy research and strategy development for the South African public sector;
risk/impact assessment and due diligence for mining and forestry projects throughout Southern Africa;
and donor and development finance project evaluation. Donald currently heads SRK Consulting environmental and sustainability practice
in the Johannesburg office.
The Sixth Extinction: A talk and presentation by Dr John Anderson (S.A.N.B.I.)
Life on earth during the past 500 million years has been decimated by mass global extinctions on five previous occasions.
Dr John Anderson's perspective is that we are currently midway through the Sixth Extinction, unleashed by humankind.
This present cataclysm has occurred in three great waves of human population explosion, colonization and exploitation worldwide -
each wave following a seminal communications breakthrough. Dr Anderson, as part of the ongoing Gondwana Alive project,
proposes a number of strategies toward stemming this Sixth Extinction.
"Cut the Carbon" March: A talk and presentation by Bishop Geoff Davies
Bishop Geoff Davies is the founder of the Southern African Faith Communities Environmental Institute (SAFCEI).
He and his wife Kate recently walked 500 miles of a 1000 mile walk in Great Britain to draw attention to global warming and
the urgent issue of reducing our carbon footprint. The SAFCEI management committee is holding a quarterly business meeting on
the 19th - 21st November at St. Francis and there will be an opportunity to meet with some of the faith communities represented at the breakfast.

Coleen Vogel has been part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change working group (IPCC) which was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 2007 with Al Gore.

She is an Honorary Research Professor in the Sociology of Work unit (SWOP).
She has been widely involved in the environmental movement since the 1970’s and is widely published on the issues of environment, gender and militarisation.
In her book, "The war against ourselves", Professor Cock explores different human understandings of nature and how these understandings affect our interactions with nature.

Is conservation of biodiversity an evolutionary imperative for humans?
Professor Kevin Balkwill is head of the school of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences (APES) at the University of Witwatersrand.
He is also an ordained Anglican priest based at Holy Cross Parish in Orlando.
His talk is based on his inaugural lecture which explores biodiversity and the future of the human species.
