The Amandla Forum and the Department of Sociology
The Johannesburg Amandla Collective is keen to create a new public space for exploring progressive ideas at this time of deepening social, political and environmental crisis in our country. For this reason we are starting a new seminar series on some of the pressing issues that we face. The first meeting will feature a screening of the gripping documentary, Uranium Road, which will be introduced by Dr David Fig, author of the book Uranium Road on which the film is based and veteran anti-nuclear activist, followed by a critical discussion on the issue of nuclear energy. Annie Sugrue, CURES (Citizens United for Renewable Energy and Sustainability) Southern African Coordinator will be on hand to answer any queries about renewable energy as a potential to replace fossil and nuclear energy.
Nuclear power generation is championed as a pragmatic way to diversify energy supplies, enhance energy security and reduce carbon emissions. But how accurate are those claims? The film Uranium Road, a penetrating 53-minute documentary, examines the case for nuclear energy and exposes the multi-billion rand industry behind it.
The film combines archival footage, interviews with local and international experts and tells the story of a community living on the edge of a nuclear waste dump in scenic Namaqualand. > back to top <
